UNCC PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Client: UNCC – Contractor: Draw Enterprises – 2013

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a public research university located in Charlotte, North Carolina with close to 30,000 students. UNCC contracted CESI to complete University standard brick paver sidewalks and a custom designed 400 linear-foot wood pedestrian foot bridge boardwalk behind an existing guard rail to connect the Chancellor’s Residence to the Alumni Building.

The boardwalk was designed to provide a modular, level surface behind the guard rail over a steep fill slope to minimize initial construction costs and provide flexibility in future maintenance. CESI integrated a hidden access panel in the deck section to access existing utility junction boxes and also mounted a safety light to the deck, which required custom designed attachment brackets.

CESI provided public bid documents and administrated all construction aspects of the deck bid, award, and construction. The bridge provides an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a segmental retaining wall-and-paver sidewalk while allowing for forested views in the adjacent old growth woods.
