CESI is pleased to announce that we have been awarded the civil engineering design and surveying contract for an exciting revitalization project at Dan Nicholas Park in Rowan County. On January 5th, Rowan County commissioners approved the purchase of two new electric train sets and authorized a larger, safer track footprint for the park’s popular train attraction. As part of that action, CESI was awarded a contract to provide survey and track design services.
The investment follows a 2024 derailment involving the park’s aging 16-inch-gauge train system, which has been in service for over 50 years and has required frequent repairs. The county also approved a $1,343,250 contract with Chance Rides LLC to procure two electric train sets featuring replica 1800s locomotives, passenger coaches—including an ADA-accessible car—and on-station charging. The new trains will operate on a wider 24-inch gauge track, enhancing safety and stability.
CESI’s team will provide comprehensive surveying and civil design to support the expanded track alignment, ensuring proper grading, drainage, and integration within the park environment.
County leaders see this project as a key step in restoring Dan Nicholas Park to its former status as one of North Carolina’s most visited parks. CESI is proud to help lay the groundwork for a safer, more accessible attraction that will support the park’s renewed role as a regional destination.
