OAKWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL, AN INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE WORLD SCHOOL

Client: Iredell-Statesville School System

Oakwood Middle School was reopened in the fall of 2021 after a 12-month renovation of the former Statesville Middle School. The original school was built in the early 1960’s and was originally called Oakwood Middle School. When Iredell County and Statesville City merged, it was renamed to Statesville Middle. The school has seen a succession of additions and revisions over the last 60 years.

There were approximately eight levels, multiple within the cafeteria and gymnasium alone. Given the substantial topography with the site, the streams, the flood plain, the confined site, and the multiple floor levels, and the need to tie all those elements together a detailed survey by CESI was initiated in 2019. Due to the nature of the renovation work required, CESI was integral during the construction process in coordinating the design with unknowns discovered during the construction process. With several major public sewer outfalls with the site and with adjacent city streets being impacted, CESI helped to coordinate between the design team, the city, the contractor, and the school system.
